Novel Materials

The FORC technique is a powerful tool used to evaluate hysteretic systems.  It is particulary useful because it can be used to seperate interactions between constituent elements and intrensic behavior.  This is done by examining the system in a series of mixed states and does not require any sort of nano- or micro-scale probe.  For these reasons it is particularily attractive, and we have worked to expand the use and to expand on previous works, brining new powerful explanations about the fundamental origin of this technique.

Neutron scattering offers incredibe potential to conduct nanoscale research.  Specifically, neutrons - with sub nanometer wavelengths - have very good resolution of nanoscale structures.  Further, the neutron has a spin moment, making it sensitive to magnetism.  Using these details I most frequently perform polarized neutron reflectometry to determine the depth profile of magnetic materials.  Similarly, looking at off-specular scattering I can qualify the lateral magnetic ordering.

Phenominazed Neutron Scattering

While general 'hands-on' scale physics is relatively well understood, the behavior of physics below the 'fundamental length scales' (e.g. mean free path, exchange length, etc.) is less well understood and predictable.  Further, on these scales competition between energy terms which is absent for larger structures can give rise to new phenomina.

Nano-scale Phenomina

High anisotropy L10 FePt is key to future high ultra-high density magnetic recording and spintronic technologies. FePt grown by traditional methods deposits in the low-anisotropy A1 phase, which is then annealed into the high anisotropy phase.  Quantifying the details of this transformation can be very difficult but is crucial to its integration into industrial processes.

We demonstrate that the traditional method of quantifying this transition is not using x-rays is at-best reliable due to its insensitivity to amorphous regions. Using the first order reversal curve (FORC) technique we demonstrate an alternative approach using the magnetic fingerprints of L10 and A1 phases.
